History Of Scrap Metal Recycling In PA

By Myrtle Cash

The reprocessing of wastes into new useful products is referred to as recycling. Recycling has led to the development of many enterprises all over the world. This particular business has several stages which start by the collection of waste metals that are transported to junk yards for reprocessing. The metals are melted and shaped or made into totally new products. The establishment of many breakers yards is evidence that scrap metal recycling in PA is a big business.

Two main categories of scrap metal exist. These categories are based on the availability of Iron in a metal. Those metals with Iron in them are called ferrous while those without Iron are non ferrous. These two categories are established by use of strong magnets that are usually supported by cranes. Ferrous metal is magnetic while non ferrous are not.

Enterprises that are involved in this business reach their customers through different forms of advertisements. They sell their services which enable people to dispose off their junk either from their places of work or residential areas and earn some money in return. The pricing of scrap varies from one wrecking yard to another. The prices however are fixed by the weight of the scrap.

Many benefits arise from the recycling of waste. Use of recycled material saves a lot on the energy used to extract new metals. This indirectly helps in reducing the amounts of waste that results from mining. The environment also is among the beneficiaries of this process. Pollution is greatly reduced. Air, water and land are thus spared from deterioration.

Apart from environmental benefits, the economy also benefits. People are able to get employment opportunities in various junk yards around. The smelters are able to earn their living from this business. In some cases the locals also benefit because some junk yards allow them to purchase some of the scrap before they are melted and reprocessed.

A lot of revenue is collected by the government from this industry. This revenue can be collected from the taxes imposed locally or from the exports of the junk to other foreign countries. The foreign currency received from the export goes a long way in improving the balance of payment. The reserves also help to strengthen the dollar among the many competing currencies. This money earned is distributed to other sectors of the economy such as the health sector thereby benefiting all the Americans at large.

Reusing of these wastes has led to the emergence of new matters of great importance. Issues on health for instance have been deeply looked at with the aim of understanding and solving problems. Comprehensive studies have been carried out and this has led to the discovery of means and ways to solve some of these problems. Conditions, laws and regulations have been improved and introduced to protect the employees of this industry.

Despite the various challenges scrap metal recycling in PA faces, good things have come from it. Nature has been taken care of since the need for extraction of raw materials has reduced. This has made earth a safer and a more comfortable place.
